Grave of George D Walker

Many of us know very well the story of Gilbert Moore, our ancestor on Grandma Walker's side of the family, who died during the Civil War at the Andersonville Prison. The Walker family was also well engaged in the war. Our Grandfather's great uncle George D. Walker died in April 1865 at a Union Hospital in Davids Island, New York, although we don't yet know the cause of death.

George was buried at Cypress Hills National Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY. Last week Kathy and I were vacationing in NYC, and took a trip to find his grave. Here is a picture of his tombstone in line with his fallen comrades. Interestingly, Davids Island Hospitals also treated Confederate Soldiers, and many of them are also buried in this cemetery.

Craig,
Very nicely done! I love your photography skills or do they belong to Kathy?

In the close up of the single stone it's interesting that you can see what looks like an interstate road sign in the distance. Was that planned? Have you ever see a photo of a cemetery like this before the stones were placed and the grass planted? There is one in my Andersonville file.

Looking forward to chatting this weekend.

I took the pictures. In high school I was a photographer for the publications staff and learned a lot about taking quality pictures.

The interstate road sign was not intentional and if I had noticed I would have made sure it WASN'T in the picture. We didn't have much time in the cemetery . . . I'll tell you the whole story this weekend.

I have not seen pre- and post-burial pictures. That would be interesting to see.
