New Name for Tri State University

Ray and Bob, did you hear they are going to change the name of Tri State University? I
think it is going to be Trine State University after a couple who donated 10 million dollars to the university. The board has already agreed to change the name. The students and alumni are in an uproar about the whole thing.

Yup, Coleen, money talks----very loudly. The same thing happened here in Terre Haute when the Hulmans gave Rose Polytechnic Institute a boat load of excess cash. But Rose Poly came up with a good new name. I don't mind that the name changes, but with all due respect to the Trines (and this is not their first donation), Trine State leaves me a little limp. I'd be more in favor of following Rose Poly's lead and go with something like Trine Technology Institute. I like Trine Institute of Technology better but it doesn't abbreviate very nicely. Fortunately, I don't have to make or live with whatever the decision is.

Did anyone happen to know a Prof. Alice Parrott from Tri State? She was a cousin of mine.

Dale, your question caused me to look for and, luckily, find my copy of The History of Tri-State College, which Dr. Parrott wrote. My recollection was that she was still around but had retired just prior to 1956 when Bob and I began our engineering studies. The History dust cover confirms this, saying she retired in 1954 to devote full time to the History. It was published in 1959, the same year I graduated. So I certainly knew of her and her excellent contributions to the College. She wrote in the Preface to the History that "her heart and hopes and yes, her life itself, are in Tri-State College". I'd say she'd be a cousin to be very proud of.
