California Fire Update

Click on this link to see more detailed info. http://www.nbcsandiego.com/index.html Go to the "Fire Maps" in the center of the page. The Thomas Brothers Map coordinates are superimposed over the maps. We are in grid 1289-G2, bounded by a triangle of Highway 94 on the south, Interstate 805 on the east and Interstate 15 on the west. I don't think we're in any danger now. Yesterday morning, I started packing a suitcase and taking a photo inventory of the house and it's contents and had planned what important papers, pictures, etc. I should get out in addition to the dogs. Peter was at work. The winds were, and still partially are, very erratic. The Santa Ana winds, off of the desert, have mostly subsided and now they are coming off the ocean, our normal wind pattern. During the transition, it's hard for firefighters to predict what will happen and it makes it much more dangerous. I think this contributed to even larger evacuations. I would say the closest the fires have gotten to us is about 4 miles, as the crow flies. Dad is 2 or 3 miles from the same fire, but with Sweetwater Resevoir between him and the fire. TOO close for comfort! The sun is out, but it is still very hazy with the smoke. The smoke odor isn't as strong here as it was 4 years ago in the Cedar Fire, but today is much stronger than yesterday. Almost the entire county is on fire. Two new ones started on MCAS Camp Pendelton in Oceanside yesterday. This morning both directions of Interstate 5 was closed because of them. Northbound traffic is still not flowing. Interstate 15 is open sporadically. Interstate 8 has been closed off and on, but mostly for high profile vehicles because of the wind.

My Uncle Jack & Aunt Carol were evacuated yesterday, and one of my cousins Sunday in the middle of the night. So far both homes survived. The other cousin is a little further north in Temecula, and so far is OK. He owns property in the burn area, but it didn't burn. He had some wind damage to his greenhouse.

I think we have some relation in Hemet, California, but can't remember who or where. I haven't heard of problems in this area.

Our cousin Terry Wisler lives in Hemet. This is Shirley Weaver's brother.

Thank you for the info Elaine. I was guessing you were further away than that. I would have guessed the city itself was well up in flames before it would get to you. I know what you feel. We were moved into our new house in Los Alamos only a few months when the area was hit by a fire in 1977.

I lived in Santa Ana for two years and am well acquainted with most of the cities and towns. But I never experienced anything like the present fires.
I do remember coming down a canyon in the wind one day and seeing a camper blown off the road in front of us.
Is the San Diego zoo in danger? One of the best.
Thanks for the info. Always good to get it from someone who really knows. We hope it doesn't come closer than it has to you. Tell Dwight I have been thinking of him and wishing him the best!

THANKS ELAINE FOR THE UPDATE.
I WAS UNABLE TO BRING UP THE "FIRE MAPS". THERE MUST BE SOMETHING WRONG WITH MY SYSTEM. I HOPE IT ISN'T THE FIRE.

Hi Again:

The fires are still burning, but mostly heading east now, so we're out of danger, however, some of the smaller outlying communities are still in it's path, with new evacuation orders this evening. The fire in the northern part of the county is also threatening homes. Television programming is back to normal, so this alone tells me it's better! Absolutely nothing but fire coverage on the 3 major networks from Sunday evening through mid-day on Wed. Not even national news until last night.

Our San Diego Zoo wasn't in danger. It's between where we live and the ocean. However, it's sister, the Wild Animal Park, was right in the middle of the initial fires, and I think this area is still under evacuation orders, but I don't think the park is threatened at this time. They evacuated as many of the endangered species as they could, put some in "firesafe" buildings and turned the big guys loose in the 25+ acre enclosures which have been eaten by them down to bare earth, with limited fire fuel remaining and hoped for the best. Thank heavens the fire didn't actually go through the park!

I showed Dad how to work the "phone book" in his phone again last night. He was quite frustrated. Denny, sorry he called you 5 or 6 times when trying to call his cousin Max on the Pehlke side of the family earlier in the day. He didn't know who he'd dialed, but kept saying he couldn't get the phone to scroll down below your name! I told him he should have just let it ring, and said hello and that you'd have talked to him!

Howard, Johnny, Don and Tom are also in his phonebook. He can be reached at 619-741-5185, if he can reach the phone.

Bob, not sure why the maps wouldn't come up on your system. I sent my brother-in-law the same link and he was able to view them.

Tom, I remember Mom & Dad talking about Terry now, but am not sure we've ever met.
