This week has finally brought Spring to West Michigan. Out here on the farm, I awake every morning to a herd of deer in the lower alfalfa field, usually a turkey or three gobbling all around us. There are also sounds of geese, sandhill cranes, ducks, and frogs sounding off down at the lakes.
Wednesday was the last day until July 15 that I could run Obi on the rabbits. My friends Lee and Tim and I went out and ran Obi, Dodge and Jay. Obi is the youngest of the three and he started four rabbits on his own. It was fun to watch as the older dogs let him run for a bit before they decided he knew what he was doing and joined in on the hunt. (There's a comment on human nature there too) We ran from 9am to 2pm. The boys had one rabbit lead them all over Lee's farm for almost an hour!
I'm off today and Judy and I are celebrating my birthday a day early today, as I have to work all weekend. Today will be capped by taking the canoe out on the lake and fly fishing for some fresh bluegills.
Turkey season opens on Judy's birthday (May 3) and runs through Memorial Day. I have the same problem in the fall when small game opens on our wedding anniversary... oh well. Maybe I can talk Judy into some turkey hunting!
I've put in for vacation for the reunion, God and boss willin' we'll be there!
Plan on some venison dishes at the reunion. I'll be bringing burger and steaks. If it works out, my friend has a permit for Sandhill Crane. It is extremely delicious. I have a little left, maybe I can talk him into another bird for us.
If I have some time, the woodchucks are wreaking havoc and I could can some for bbq sandwiches. We'll see.
I've realized that as the Walker cousins reach new stages in life, there is a bigger need for more frequent communication. What I have decided to do, is try to offer a solution. I've come up with a way for us to have an online bulletin board. This will be a good way for you to either share family information, or to learn something about the concerns of the family. Previously, our family updates have been made by phone and email, but occasionally someone accidentally gets left out of the loop.

Woodchuck BBQ? I hope it tastes better than the beaver (Robin rated it the worst thing she'd ever eaten) we ate at the Indiana State Fair. Maybe it will scare off the Woodchucks from our property if they smell it cooking at the picnic.
BTW, Steve, you have a second cousin living up near you that says he will be popping into your store soon.
Take Judy along for those special days and declare her the "spotter". When on a train in Alaska, there was a hunter who pointed out a moose on a high ridge. It took 5 minutes before the rest of us could see it, even after he showed us exactly where to look.
Happy Birthday Steve
Have fun hunting. We hope to see you before the reunion - possibly in the next few weeks if you have a Saturday off. Let me know when you can.
