I have heard a number of comments on what a fine service we had for Don. One person told me it was the best memorial service she had ever been to. Carol commented about how fitting the song "Living for Jesus" was to use at the service. How appropriate for Don, as that is exactly the way he lived his life. He was a true role model for the rest of us.
And that first service in the new sanctuary was a brilliant idea and very touching. I never would have thought that a scripture lesson about Noah would be appropriate for a funeral. Boy, was I wrong. Don the builder, think about it, for his family, his church and his hobby. And for a guy who couldn't effectively use a hammer. Talk about rising above your limitations. Many of us have pieces of his woodworking. I can't even think of doing that sort of work and I have 2 good hands. Thank you Don for being an inspiration to all of us in so many ways.
But my strongest memory of the Celebration of Life for Don is that beautiful song that Jack sang. Many of you may not know that Jack has been singing and playing guitar for many years, although Jack tells me that he has not played much recently. He has written many of his own songs and has participated in jail ministry. The song he sang was written by Terry Smith, a school teacher from Texas. It was sung as a duet by Johnny Cash and his wife of many years June Carter Cash. If any of you would like an mp3 file of this version, I can send it to you. Here is a youtube link if you want to watch a video of it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5BdIjeRcqxE
By the way, if any of you are not familiar with Don's woodworking, ask me at the campout and I will show you some of his pieces.

Thank you Tom,
You were able to put in to words all that we experienced. It was truly a Celebration of Life. A life that we shall never forget.
Thanks Tom,
I think those who attended the service would agree with your kind words and description of the celebration. I have heard Jack sing many times and hope he brings that guitar with him to the reunion to share a few songs around the campfire. Yes Don was a builder of wood but he also crafted many relationships and we all benefited from it.
Thanks for the compliments. The version I followed is on a CD of Alison Krause and the Cox Family, called I Know Who Holds Tomorrow. Except if you listen to that it has two guitars playing a lot of notes together. I don't have an mp3 of it. I have been singing more recently. I sang for my church two services the Sunday after the funeral, the latest song I wrote and it went well.
