Visitors to California

Robert E. Walker family July 1952 at Burbank or Pacoima, California. Photo by Dwight Walker

This picture of my family was taken by Dwight in 1952 on his trip west. He and Norma Jean went with our Uncle Carl and Aunt Ida. Dwight was telling us that his Dad wanted he and Norma Jean to go along but that Dwight was reluctant because they were in the process of building a new home. Norma Jean kept very detailed daily records of all of their trips and I have scanned 200 slides which were taken on that 1952 trip. This is probably the best picture I have seen of my family taken in that era. It was so neat to talk to Dwight about the trip and then see the photos from it. He has a great picture of the Pontiac flathead 8 driving through a redwood tree in Yosemite.

I remember in 1953 when we lived in Pacoima that we had other visitors from back east who came to visit us. I remember sitting in the living room and tossing a rolled up newspaper back and forth. Carol does not remember anyone visiting us in Pacoima from back east. Does anyone have any clues who if anyone that could be?

I believe that Don Drake was the first cousin we met in California. He hitchiked out with a friend and lived with us for awhile. Many of you may remember his as Sonny.

We will be in Capistrano next week at a different condo. We fly back to Iowa on the 17th.

I am pretty sure you are right on the nice family picture. What I can't get is how such a good looking little boy in that picture got to be a retired old man now. Just seems such a short time frame. It was the year before your Dad and I went to Naperville to Seminary and College.

What a nice picture. It sure scanned nice. I liked the suspenders on the little guy.
